What happened

On July 9, 2026, OpenAI released GPT-5.6 to the public in three tiers: Sol, the flagship for hard, long-running problems, Terra in the middle, and Luna as the fast, cheap option. It launched alongside ChatGPT Work, an agent with a built-in coding tool that can run multi-step jobs and hand back finished sheets, slides, docs, and web apps. OpenAI listed Sol at $5 in and $30 out per million tokens, Terra at $2.50 and $15, and Luna at $1 and $6.

The context

It is OpenAI's most capable system to date and pushes the product from answering questions toward doing the work end to end.

What this means for you

Everyday users get a stronger assistant that can attempt entire tasks on its own, though the priciest tier is aimed at businesses.
